Previously, I shared with you some issues in my business that held me back. Nothing I’ve gone through has been unique to me as a business.
I’ve learned in the almost 5 years I’ve been in business that most businesses face similar stumbling blocks. There’s nothing very special or unique about these situations. Almost every business goes through them.
One of the things I love most about helping people is letting them know they’re not alone. That we all go through this stuff. And there are almost always answers to help us.
Here are 3 common themes I see a lot, have experienced myself, and have helped many others move past.
One of the very first things I notice with businesses that are starting to establish themselves online is there’s almost always fear holding them back.
- “I don’t want to annoy people.”
- “I don’t want to be a smarmy marketing person.”
- “People won’t like what I’m doing.”
I’ve heard some form of the above from almost everyone I’ve worked with. And I’ve been there myself too. It’s painful.
Part of getting past this is really understanding what your “why” is. Reminding yourself why you got into this *thing* in the first place.
When you have a firm understanding of why you do what you do, it’s then that you start to really believe in it.
Once you get that in place, those fears tend to dissipate. Not entirely, but I’ll tell you what; you tend to care a whole lot less about annoying some rando on the Internet. And mind you, that rando is never going to invest in your business.
I can’t tell you how many ideas I’ve had that never went anywhere because I needed everything to be perfect.
Has this happened to you? I bet it has. It happens to everyone.
When I talk to people establishing their business online – whether it’s social media, a new podcast, a blog, their newsletter, etc. – they almost always have expectations of what it’s going be like. How it’s going to be perceived. What people will think.
And they need everything to be just so.
But the reality is nothing is ever going to be perfect. Ever. This is just your brain holding you back. I know, I have done this many, many times. I’m currently doing it with my new podcast. 😂
You’re never going to get better at anything until you begin.
You have to start sharing online so you can understand how people are responding to you. You have to post so you can build your audience. You have to get in front of people in order to get your message across. And then you learn what works, what doesn’t, and iterate from there.
Existing online as a business isn’t a one way street. You need that feedback loop from followers and potential customers.
Being unclear of your message
You can’t get from one place to the other without knowing where you are going.
It’s important to have a plan in place about why you’re online. What you’re trying to achieve. And how you’re going to do it.
Not being strategic about your online presence causes so much unnecessary frustration and pain. And it really doesn’t need to be like that.
Think about what your message is. Create content to get that message across. Narrow in on where your potential customers are. Come up with a schedule. Rinse. Repeat. Tweak.
I talk about all of these things with my students and clients often. You’re not alone. Almost everyone goes through this stuff.
Don’t let fear get in your way. Don’t let perfection stop you from getting your message across. And always, always have a message in place.
All of these things will get you closer to building the best business you can.
