I was listening to Carrie Green’s book “She Means Business” today on my afternoon walk, and my ears perked up when she referenced this quote:
You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody that hates peaches.

Carrie uses the quote to introduce the reader to a situation she had earlier in her career, that made it crystal clear you simply can not get everyone to like what you do.
Seeking input about an online magazine she had made, she asked a woman she recently met (who was also starting her own business) to take a look. To say the woman had a strong reaction to Carrie’s brand colors – pink, coral, and gold – is an understatement. She called them patronizing, said she hated pink, that no one will ever take her seriously, and lastly that what she had created was demeaning to women.
Understandably, Carrie felt like she had been punched in the gut. Instead of crawling away to cry, she looked over her magazine and recognized how much work she had done, and how much she truly loved pink! So she hit publish and sent it out to her subscribers.
The response was amazing. People loved it!
But, some hated it too.
And that was totally OK. Carrie realized one thing in that harsh moment, that this magazine represented her business, and that some people would not relate to it. And those people were not her target audience.
Side note: Carrie now owns a million dollar business and helps women entrepreneurs all over the world, and her colors haven’t changed. Instead they’ve probably gotten MORE pink!
I once heard this story from a friend. We’ll call him Mike.
Mike was called into his boss’ office to be spoken to about issues he was having with his coworkers. Apparently Mike was telling coworkers what they wanted to hear, but was unable to deliver on his promises. When the boss was done expressing disappointment in him, Mike replied by saying “I can’t help it. I’m a people pleaser!” His boss replied, “Yeah, nobody’s pleased.”
This story always makes me laugh, because when we people please someone is always not pleased.
We can’t please everyone, and when we try we spread ourselves too thin, and don’t deliver.
We’re going to have unfollowers, unsubscribers, and people that don’t get or even like our business for whatever reason. It’s a reality.
So get that dirt off your shoulder, and move forward.
The point is that our business suffers when we try and please every.single.person. And we’ll make ourselves crazy in the process!
That’s why it’s absolutely important that we focus on who is listening, who is following, and who really cares about what we have to say. And simply let go of the others.
Your business will be better for it.
